In Search of…” is the title of the traveling solo show by American artist Matthew Day Jackson (present in DROME 19 – the Supernatural issue), now in its final stage at the Gemeentemuseum den Haag.
Through a selection of works realized between 2007 and 2011, the exhibition is organized thanks to the use of different medias such as photography, video and sculpture that skillfully blend the boundaries between past, present and future, transporting visitors into a world in which yesterday, today and tomorrow become one.
Among the many works, Life And Time, a collection of magazine covers that blend visual icons of different eras, decontextualising them in order to obtain others meanings, The Tomb, inspired by Antoine Le Moiturier’s Tomb of Philippe Pot, and even August 6, a series which consists of vertical views of the various cities bombed by the Allies during the World War II. But, more than any other, the underlying theme of “In Search of…” is the eponymous video based on a format of a popular American television series aired from 1976 to 1982 and conducted by Leonard Nimoy. The movie consists of fragments of a TV series interrupted by absurd tableaux or fake advertisements which cast doubt on the authenticity of what we see and invite us to revalutate our idea and acceptance of the world’ history.
